Such a simple question and one that spinners everywhere ask themselves and occasionally someone else more often than most of us will admit.
Who am I kidding? From time to time, spinners ask the internet, too.
Last night, I asked our Joan* that tired question.
The silk, she said.
I may have hurt myself laughing.
You see, my wrist is still killing bothering me and that silk is nearly the size of a rugby ball. There is no way I can even think about spinning something like silk right now. (We won't talk about how 3.2 oz into spinning that beautiful silk I will start to passionately hate all things pink because we know that is unavoidable.)
Instead I am slowly pre-drafting something simpler...
Because, right now, simpler is much better.
Btw, if that fiber doesn't work out, we're calling it crackers. Brace yourselves now.
* * * *
In other news, trying to get FO style photos of a cowl is a challenge when you are not part giraffe and no longer have a cat. There may or may not ever be photos of that cowl. I'm going to give it another go this morning, but don't hold your breath, people.
* It took almost 2 years, but I've FINALLY got her coming out of her shell. People, it's fucking fabulous! Oh, and I NEVER mentioned this to you. o.O

Champagne bottle for cowl posing. Big one. (You can buy an empty at the bottle redemption, then lie to us about its origins...)

I am loving seeing your posts early in the morning, just thought I'd mention that. If your wrist hurts then silk would be a big mistake, BFL or merino or something is a much better choice. I like the colors in the ones you chose. Oh, and when I can't choose what to spin next I send Dale or Hannah into the fiber stash to pick for me.

Had we all been given an opinion, I would have picked the second fiber. That silk does looks scary, beautiful but scary:) BTW, how does something get lighter when you add something to it?

Two words on how to take a modeled pic of a cowl. Bathroom mirror. It was the only way I could figure out how to see what I was doing and not just take a million random pictures of my left ear.

Either one looks beautiful, but you do need to take care of that wrist! BTW, I have no cooperative models, so I put mine on the porch or in the bathtub. Of course, every picture I take looks like that, so maybe I'm not the one to be giving photography advice;-P Hugs, kiddle!!!

I'm not sure how a cat can help a fo photo. I'll be thinking about that all day now. Thanks.

My dear, you must protect the wrist and if you won't give up spinning for awhile to rest it, then go with something easy to draft. The silk looks fabulous, but you'll need a pair of healthy hands to do it justice.

I think the silk lost weight in my futile efforts to get the smell of silk out of it.
Or it's a liar.

The Silk obviously had more air in it before our Joan dyed it. It's that NY air, full of 'stuff'.

It's about time! You'll get her whipped into shape eventually.

That silk just joined the national needed effort to loose weight that's all!
Oh and photos of FOs are such a pain sometime,,,

Put it on the freaky teddy.

The silk si beautiful. So excited I didn't use spellcheck. Is beautiful. I don't think you should spin it now and make your wrist worse. Save it for another day and lay off the video games. :)

Ohhhh, silk!! But don't hurt yourself, it will wait!!

Is someone dissing my air?
Posted by: joan | Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 09:07 AM
Heee. I'm having the greatest giggles just reading the comments, and yes, Joan, I do believe someone WAS dissing your air ;^)
Good choice, less stress on the wrist.

Do you still have a Christmas poinsettia? I hear they get cold and really appreciate a nice cowl...
Posted by: kmkat | Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 11:31 AM
What about the silk but as a do weight? Would that help? It's such a gorgeous color, you can't not spin it up. I'm drooling over the computer right now.
Posted by: Kelly | Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 01:41 PM
That would be dk weight instead of do weight. Effing autocorrect.
Posted by: Kelly | Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 01:41 PM
Wait. WTF happened in the dye pot? Dangerous place to be silk, I think!
Posted by: Beverly | Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 01:48 PM
The silk is lovely, but I agree with your plan not to stress the wrist too much. There's always later. That's when I plan to spin most of my stash.

Slow and steady wins the race. Or a turtle. Or something.
Honey, it's already crackers. :)

I hope the slow pre-drafting is working with your wrist. Colors like that are so fun because I can never get a good visualization of what the finished yarn will look like.
The beautiful silk will wait for you. I overdid my celebrating of Groundhog and World Ukulele Days, so I have to be gentle with my wrist now, too.

Simple is always preferable, in my opinion.

Now I must see the freaky teddy!

Hang the cowl on the fence. That's what I do. Take some pics. Then I put the darn thing on and put the camera on the fireplace mantle which is throat height to take photos and then crop out my head with photoshop.

Listen to margene, please. heal up!
The silk is especially lovely. The wool will surprise me as usual (I'm sure) when I see it in yarn form.
Hugs.
